Friends, we are reading during these weeks of summer from the thirteenth chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, which contains many of the great parables of Jesus. But I want to focus just on one today because it’s so rich both theologically and spiritually: the parable of the wheat and the weeds. Jesus’ story shows us how evil, by its very nature, is a corruption of the good. It is a parasite—and we need requisite care and patience in dealing with it.

John Piper describes four scenes in the wilderness of Exodus 17 that are brimming with implications for our own lives:

1. God brought his people to a waterless place in the wilderness on purpose. God commands the movement of our lives—we don't go into the wilderness by accident.
2. The Israelites didn't trust God's saving purposes but instead despised God. God's patience will run out with those who despise instead of trust him.
3. God answers the people with water and, more importantly, with his life-giving presence. What people need more than water is God’s presence, even today.
4. Moses memorializes the failure of the Israelites. God intends for this failure to be seen in light of the gift—God himself. “In your wilderness,” Piper says, “don’t be like them. Do not harden your hearts. Trust him.”

Piper closes by referencing how God passed over the sins of the people in the Old Testament by punishing those sins through the cross of Christ 1,400 years later. Piper says, “Every undeserved blessing you will ever taste now and forever is owing to the death of Jesus.”

Though we may not understand all the reasons why God chooses to bring us into the wilderness, we can trust his character, his saving power, and his good purposes. In the wilderness, may we thirst for more than water—finding all we need in Jesus.

Friends, no indication whatsoever is given in Scripture that the moral prescriptions are somehow more important than the liturgical prescriptions. Being a good person is not enough—it’s crucially important to be aligned to God in his divine splendor through ritual and ceremony. My concern is, as our churches begin to open, that some may forget the vital importance and essentiality of the Mass.

Friends, our Gospel today from Matthew 15, the famous story of Jesus and the Syrophoenician woman, is one of those Gospels that bothers and unnerves people. How should we read it? It is not that Jesus was grouchy after a tough day of ministry and this plucky woman speaks truth to power to get what she wants. We are meant to read it in a much more subtle way. This story is driving at an issue that is central to the Bible—namely, the relationship between Israel and the other nations.

John Fullerton MacArthur Jr. (born June 19, 1939) is an American Protestant pastor and author who hosts the internationally syndicated Christian radio and television program Grace to You.[1] He has been the pastor of Grace Community Church, a non-denominational church in Sun Valley, California since February 9, 1969.[2] He is currently the chancellor emeritus of The Master's University in Santa Clarita and The Master's Seminary.

MacArthur is a proponent of expository preaching, and has been acknowledged by Christianity Today as one of the most influential preachers of his time.[3] MacArthur has written or edited more than 150 books. His MacArthur Study Bible, has sold more than one million copies, receiving a Gold Medallion Book Award.

What did the biblical authors intend to communicate when they used the word "earth?" Genesis 1 is an ancient cosmology that uses specific words and images to describe the ordered world as understood by ancient people. When we study this chapter, we can discover how the writers of the Bible understood the structure of the world and its origins

In Hebrew, the word for "earth" ('erets) typically means land rather than a globe or sphere floating in space. The raqia' is the solid dome above the land that holds back the waters above, and the creation of the raqia' creates a place where life can flourish. Dive into Genesis 1 and explore how these Hebrew words can help us see the important theological claim being made through this cosmology picture.

Proverbs is the accumulation of wisdom from generations of godly insightful people. It promotes a life of virtue and “fear of the Lord,” so that you can truly experience the good life. Proverbs is one of the three books that explore these themes of biblical wisdom.
